How to Crochet a Simple Basket
You are here: Home / Crochet / Easy, Modern Crochet Storage Basket – Free Crochet Pattern
Who doesn't love an easy, stylish modern crochet storage basket to fancy up their home? This free crochet pattern uses only single crochet stitches but with a modern twist!
In this pattern, you will also learn how to make the single crochet spike stitch. It's worked the same way as a regular single crochet stitch, only placed in a unique spot. This creates the extra fancy, textured rim of the basket.

We recently moved into a new home that has a half bath downstairs and there are two problems with that. I have never decorated a small half bath before and I am the worst interior decorator. BUT… My son's birthday party is coming up and that meant I needed to get my act together and figure out how to decorate this butt ugly half bath.
I, of course, did a great deal of interior decorating research on Pinterest. I then bought a handful of awesome decor from Amazon. But it didn't feel complete. Nothing's complete without a little handmade touch!
By the way, if you'd rather follow a video or you're confused about a step, you can find the full video tutorial for this pattern over on my YouTube channel!
That's when I decided to create a couple of baskets. I wasn't planning on writing up the pattern, but I absolutely loved the way they turned out!
I've had several skeins of this Paintbox Cotton DK yarn for well over a year and I thought, Hey, this could work. And it was the perfect yarn for the job!
I wanted these baskets to be simple so I started it off with single crochets. But I also wanted there to be some sort of modern texture. I remembered using the spike stitch years ago and if that wasn't enough, I knew changing the color would make it look even more dramatic.
So that's how the design came about!

The Yarn
As I mentioned, I used Paintbox Cotton DK for this project. It is 100% cotton and a weight 3 yarn. I believe you can only purchase it at LoveCrafts online. A great alternative to this yarn would be Bernat Softee Baby Cotton.
If you don't want to use a weight 3 yarn, I think this basket would look beautiful in any weight! Of course, depending on the yarn you choose, your basket will end up larger than the dimensions I've listed for my own. But I'll go over how exactly to resize your basket below.
Resizing Your Modern Crochet Storage Basket
Whether you choose to use a thicker yarn or not, you may want to make your basket larger or smaller
If you want your basket to have a larger base, continue increasing past Row 12 until you reach the desired diameter.
Once you're ready to create the sides of your basket, simply move on to Round 13 by single crocheting in each stitch around. My basket has eight plain rows (with no increasing). If you would like yours taller, continue adding as many plain rows as you'd like!
The same goes for the textured rim of the basket. Follow the pattern for rounds 21-25 and if you'd like to create a longer rim, continue alternating each row.
The Techniques
Throughout the entire pattern, I held two strands of yarn. Working with multiple strands of yarn helps your basket to be more sturdy. The most frustrating thing is finishing a basket only to have the sides fold in and not actually stand up.
I know I can't be the only one who gets extremely frustrated with that scenario.
If you've never worked with multiple strands of yarn, head over to the post "Crocheting with Multiple Strands of Yarn" to find a picture and video tutorial.

Special Stitches
Doesn't the rim of this basket look extra fancy? Believe it or not, it's just single crochet stitches! The only difference is where you place the stitch. This special stitch is called the single crochet spike stitch. You might also hear it as the crochet spike stitch, the elongated spike stitch, or the long single crochet.
